Even today, Habermas, who talks much about the need to redefine the concept of modernity, makes little mention of Japan. In anthropology, it is almost trite to distinguish two types of concepts. One type consists of emic concepts, which are specific and peculiar to a particular culture and meaningful only to its members.

This means that a negative correlation exists between intra- and inter-societal cultural relativism.
