The prevailing national sentiment at that time was still strongly antiwar. Almost everyone with whom I talked in the camp and in adjacent Oregon villages not only felt that the war was none of our business and we should stay out of it, but almost instinctively assumed the United States would not become involved. We closed the Lake Odell camp as well as all side camps in September and withdrew to the company's permanent post at Camp Sherman on the Metolius River, a stream created by the snows of Three Fingered Jack and Mt.
The event destined to break the power of American antiwar sentiment began on May 10, 1940, when Hitler hurled his forces against western Europe. I had just reenrolled at Austin Peay Normal in Clarksville, Tennessee, a small school I had briefly attended in 1938-39 under the auspices of the CCC program. Though I was a pauper, my poverty qualified me for educational aid under the National Youth Administration, a federal program of relief for youth of high school and college age. Just as I settled in at Austin Peay, the German forces broke through the Allied lines in Belgium and France and raced to the English Channel.
I enjoyed lounging, sleeping, reading, and listening to the birds singing in the magnolias and pines. Perhaps the highlight of my respite was the Joe Louis-Billy Conn heavyweight championship fight on June 18. It was obvious that Billy was the great white hope of the entire ward, which was, of course, all white. Billy did not win, but he went all the way and put up a terrific fight. We were proud of him. During the week I spent in the post clinic, I was somewhat torn emotionally: I was still homesick for Clarksville and Austin Peay, but I felt a growing excitement about the coming journey to California and the Philippines.
