These changes are evident in the rise, though very small, in the number of women in senior political positions (see also Kamau, 2010). A male dominated political structure, like the one in Kenya, continues to block any agenda that attempts to address issues The Situation of Women in Kenya 27 affecting women (Kamau, 2003). An example is the Women’s Equality and Domestic Violence Bills that have been pending in Parliament for many years because the majority of male legislators may not support the enactment of such laws, which can have a negative effect on them (Kamau, 2003; Nzomo, 2003a).

Chapter Two explores the social-economic and political context in which Kenyan women find themselves operating. This background focuses on issues that affect women in order to provide a picture of the roles and expectations that Kenyan society has put on women. This is done while focusing on gender relations during colonial rule and the changes that have taken place in Kenya since 18 Researching AIDS, Sexuality and Gender independence. The aim of this chapter is to provide readers, who are not familiar with Kenya, with an image of the issues affecting women.

At the time of conducting the research (2005), I was not aware of any AIDS prevention, care, treatment or support programmes that were specifically targeting staff members. Of particular concern for me was the role played by women in providing care for family members. In many countries that have been ravaged by HIV and AIDS, those of ‘high social status’ look at the pandemic as a problem for ‘others’ as noted by Baylies and Bujra in Zambia and Tanzania, (2000), Campbell in South Africa (2003), Kaleeba and Ray in Uganda (1997), and Ochola-Ayayo in Kenya (1997).
